Why this matters
Plastic doesn’t only “appear” in the open sea. A large share moves from cities and watersheds through rivers and coasts. Research led by teams publishing in journals such as Science Advances and work summarized by UNEP and the OECD shows plastic pollution is a full life-cycle crisis: production, waste systems, and leakage into the environment.
Southeast Asia — including the Philippines — sits at the center of both biodiversity and plastic leakage risk. Dense coastlines, typhoons, incomplete waste infrastructure, and heavy single-use packaging mean rivers and shorelines can choke fast. We’ve seen it firsthand: plastic on beaches, in canals, and floating where fish still try to live.

What’s at stake
Coral reefs and coastal fisheries support food security, tourism, and coastal protection across the Philippines and the wider Coral Triangle. Plastic and degraded water quality stress ecosystems already under pressure from warming and overfishing.
Cleanup is not a substitute for better waste systems and less plastic production — but removing debris from beaches, mangroves, and rivers protects wildlife now while prevention scales up.
Donation plan
We’re early. We won’t pretend we’ve already funded fleets of cleanup ships. What we will do is build a credible, staged program: clear money rules, vetted partners, public reporting, and eventually our own on-the-ground projects — including a community cleanup kit.
10% of net proceeds from BambooTide product sales (after Amazon fees, product cost, refunds, and direct transaction costs) is reserved for ocean and waterway cleanup — not marketing, not inventory.
What “net” means
Sales revenue minus platform fees, COGS, returns, and payment costs. We’ll publish a simple definition as reporting starts.
When we give
Target: quarterly transfers once sales volume stabilizes; monthly bookkeeping from day one.
Where it goes
Verified cleanup orgs + local Philippine river/coast projects that show receipts, not just logos.
Beyond donating, we want people to participate. A BambooTide Community Cleanup Kit is on our product roadmap — tools for safe beach and river pickups, designed to be reusable, low-plastic, and useful for schools, barangays, and weekend crews.
Who we fund
We’re evaluating a mix of global organizations with proven cleanup programs and Philippine / regional groups working rivers, Manila Bay–adjacent watersheds, and island coasts. Names below are examples of the type of work we respect — not yet an official endorsement list until first gifts are made and receipts posted.
